Dr. Xiao recently joined the Michigan Technological University (MTU) in fall 2023 as an assistant professor. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Alberta in 2021, Master of Applied Science degree from Concordia University in 2017, and bachelor's degree from the Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology in 2015. Before joining MTU, he was a research assistant professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from February 2022 to August 2023. He also worked as an image algorithm engineer from 2017 to 2018 for developing deep learning algorithms to assist self-driving cars. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE). His research interests include construction informatics, AI in construction, and project management. He was investigated/co-investigated/participated multiple research projects supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Innovation and Technology Commission in Hong Kong. He has published over 20 journal articles and conference proceedings and served as the reviewer for several top journals in the field such as Automation in Construction, ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, and Advanced Engineering Informatics. He received the 2023 Best Paper Award from the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, 2022 Outstanding Reviewer Award from the ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, and the Third Place Award of the Inaugural Best Data Competition of ASCE DSA.
